My Greatest Supporters

My greatest supporters have been Dr. Cotton and Dr. Herrera. They have helped me get through the school year and plan for my future. I have learned so much from them both. Dr. Cotton has helped me plan for graduate school, as well as helped me find passion in Psychology, by working with children. Dr. Herrera has helped me plan for graduate school and find an amazing minor through Anthropology.

Favorite Saint Mary's Memory

My favorite memory on campus would be my freshman year when I used to hang out in De La Salle’s lobby all the time. I made a lot of amazing friends spending time there and it became a very popular hang out spot. Another favorite memory is when I studied abroad in Italy during my Junior Year with my girlfriend Kimberly Wesley.

My Next Chapter

I am excited to say that I will be attending Boston College next fall where I will be doing my masters in Mental Health Counseling Psychology. I will then be applying to PhD programs so that I can become Licensed Counseling Psychologist. So that I am able to help underrepresented Black and LatinX communities with their mental health.

My Greatest Supporters

I would love to thank my parents, Renee and Jacinto Amaru, and my family for their support and encouragement. My love and admiration for them is immeasurable. I would also like to thank my professors, especially in the Anthropology and Biochemistry Departments for their support, patience, and knowledge. I would also like to express my upmost gratitude for all of my friends and colleagues.

Favorite Saint Mary's Memory

My favorite St. Mary's memory is going on a walk with my new roommate my second year where he showed me the Marian grotto, Our Lady of the Oaks. It is a beautiful area hidden in the grove. It was then that I realized the memories I create here will stay with me long after I graduate.

My Next Chapter

I will be staying here at Saint Mary's College for graduate school. I will be attending the Kalmanovitz School of Education's Single Subject Teacher Credentialing Program. I hope to become a science teacher at the high-school level.

My beautiful family, supportive professors, and amazing friends. Mom and Dad, thank you for providing me endless love and support while I embarked on this journey. Your unwavering faith pushed me forward, los amo mucho. To my amazing friends who put a smile a face every single day and made my college experience so much easier. Thank you, my compassionate professors who constantly encouraged me.

Favorite Saint Mary's Memory

I had many amazing memories during my time at SMC, my favorite would probably be my first night living on campus. My roommate Kris and I were on the floor eating peaches while reflecting on how far we have come as first-generation students and what we hope to accomplish during our time at Saint Mary's. I am also going to miss the Trader Joe's runs with Marilyn and eating at homeroom all the time.

My Next Chapter

I hope to continue my academic journey at SFSU, and partake in their Pre-Health Post-Baccalaureate program while I prep for physician's assistant school. I am looking forward to embarking my journey in medicine.

“Each of us is born with a box of matches inside us but we can't strike them all by ourselves; just as in the experiment, we need oxygen and a candle to help. In this case, the oxygen, for example, would come from the breath of the person you love; the candle could be any kind of food, music, caress, word, or sound that engenders the explosion that lights one of the matches.”

My Greatest Supporters

My greatest sources of support are my family, friends, & professors. My family have always had unwavering faith in me and my ability to do what I want to do & be who I want to be, especially when I can't see it in myself. My friends are the most genuine & compassionate people I know (ILYSM) & my professors affirm my belonging in every space I wish to inhabit. Thank you all for everything, always.

Favorite Saint Mary's Memory

It's impossible to choose just one! I think my most favorite moments have been the small ones; staying after class to chat with professors & attending office hours, learning something new that just clicks, seeing friends while walking between classes, staying up late in the library, doing nothing with my best friends, and enjoying campus in the rain. I'm going to miss it all.

My Next Chapter

This coming August, I'll be part of THE Howard University's PhD in counseling psychology Fall 2021 cohort. I feel very privileged to begin doctoral study as a first step in pursuing a career - & a life - focused on advocacy, education, & social justice. I can only anticipate the many ways in which I'll grow over the next 5(ish) years as a researcher, future clinician & educator, woman, & human.

All the elements in your body were forged many, many millions of years ago in the heart of a far-away star that exploded and died. That explosion scattered those elements across the desolation of deep space. After so, so many millions of years these elements came together to form new stars and new planets. Until, eventually, they came together to make you. You are unique in the universe.
